The End is here

So its the end of the year, finally handing all my work in tomorrow. I have learnt so much from this course over the past year and i am so happy with my progress, there has only been a few problems over the past few months, nothing i cant handle, but anyway onward with the summer fun and creating a book!!

All work and NO play

Campaign after campaign....we have redone this live campaign three times!!! Finding things hard at the minute! Need to draw up final pieces, finally come up with idea that could work well, lets hope it goes down well!

The Essay and the presentation

When starting this course i did not think that there would be any writing of essays at all, I thought this was a course completely based on the creative aspect of your brain. So you can imagine how disappointed I was when I found out I had to write 2000 word essay. Luckily it was all about brands and what one was. The first half of the essay was about what I thought a brand was and second part was about my chosen brand. I decided to do my essay on Chanel, not because i am obsessed with fashion, it was more to do with the fact that i had watched the french film 'Coco before Chanel' quite recently before I got given this module. I found the film to be very informative and i really enjoyed the way that Coco Chanel was portrayed through the actress Audrey Tautou. It was such an inspiring film I thought that if it inspired me then surely it inspired a lot of other people which would give the brand a good personality. I found writing the essay because it does not come easily to me. I find writing essays quite boring and mundane i would much prefer to do an oral presentation. I found the research more interesting because i could get a feel for what Chanel was all about. After I had completed the essay I had to start on my presentation, I decided i wanted to interact with the audience so i made small laminated cards that were black with a white Chanel logo on them, I also printed some quotes that Chanel had said on the back. I handed these out for the class to get a feel for the elegance of Chanel. I also done a PowerPoint which guided me through my presentation. I found this quite easy but i made sure that i practiced a lot before hand so I wouldn't end up talking too much...I would say or too little but we know that would never happen. Overall my presentation went down well and my research did too, my essay was pretty average but I can only learn from the mistakes i made! I never thought I would say this but...writing the essay helped me a lot with my other modules.

Research

Coming into this i course i did not realise that there would be as much research to perform, I can specifically remember whilst doing my first module, being on the phone to my friend saying ' what is the point of all this research, it is ridiculous' well i have finally come to realise that research is one of the most vital assets to coming up with a new, creative and fresh ad. This is because I can get all the information about the brand and the product that i need, analyse it and see if any of it will get the creative juices flowing. It also gives me the chance to collect my own data and find out interesting facts, like why people buy the same brand of shampoo time and time again, is it because of the advertising, or is it just because of the smell or the way it makes your hair feel? Over the past year i also found out that research is a great way to look at previous ads done for the brand or product you are advertising for and looking at ads done for competing products. This always gives me a better idea of what the brand characteristics are and the brands personality, and also gives me an idea of what i am competing against, this is vital in advertising because i will always want people to go for the brand that i am advertising.

Time management

I have come to realise that time management is one of the most vital skills that has to be possessed to do this course. In my very first module i felt as though i was going to pull my hair out, my time management skills were non existent and i was staying up until 3 am every night and waking up at 7 am every morning, for a week. I vividly remember having a conversation with my tutor Kay, when i had my first tutorial, about how bad my time management was. To be honest it is not much better now, I am still scatty, unorganised and useless with time. It has got slightly better due to the organisation skills that my partner Eloise possess'. Don't get me wrong i get all my work done for the deadlines and always make sure that i do all the work that i need to and don't leave any extra for my creative partner Eloise. I have started to do more time plans which consist of drawing a table and writing what i will be doing every day until the deadline. This has helped me manage my time a little bit, but i still have along way to go...fingers crossed!

The verdict

After having the 'interesting conversation' with one of my dads colleagues, where she stated that ad's from the 80's where better than ad's today, i decided to look at some ads from both the 80's and now. After doing so i came to the conclusion that i cant say whether i agree with her because the ads were aimed at different people and different age groups. Back then advertising was not as creative and i don't think used the 80, 20 rule. I think that is a huge part in creating brilliant ads because it keeps the audience engaged. I prefer the ads from today but i also think that the ads i have chosen to use were also good and played a lot on the humour aspect of advertising. You can make your decision and let me know, it would be quite interesting to know what people think and whether people disagree with what i am saying or not! Is that what a blog is for...to start debates :).
